Breathe Tranquility: Relaxation Through Breathing

Relaxation through breathing is a widely used technique in psychotherapy to address anxiety and stress, two conditions that affect many people in today's society. The reason behind its effectiveness lies in the close connection between our breathing, our physical state and our mental well-being.

Breathing and Mood

Our breathing directly reflects our emotional and physical state. When we are anxious or stressed, we tend to breathe quickly and shallowly, using mainly the upper part of the lungs. This shallow breathing not only increases the feeling of anxiety, but also limits the amount of oxygen that reaches the body and brain.

On the other hand, when we are relaxed and calm, our breathing becomes deeper and slower, involving the lower part of the lungs and diaphragm. This deep, diaphragmatic breathing is an indicator of well-being and tranquility.

The Goal of the Breathing Technique

The main objective of the relaxation technique through breathing is to help you achieve a state of well-being and tranquility by practicing deep and conscious breathing. It is a training to learn to calm down and, what is even more valuable, to be able to apply it in situations of anxiety or stress.

Deep or Diaphragmatic Breathing

Deep breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing, is at the core of this technique. It involves conscious use of the diaphragm, a muscle located beneath the lungs, to inhale and exhale deeply and slowly. Here is a step by step of how to practice it:

  • Find a Quiet Place: Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit or lie down.
  • Body Posture: Maintain an upright but relaxed posture. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen, just below your ribs.
  • Inhale Deeply: Breathe in slowly through your nose, allowing air to fill your abdomen. You should feel your abdomen expand while your chest moves very little.
  • Exhale in a Controlled Manner: Exhale gently through your mouth, allowing air to come out slowly. With each exhalation, focus on relaxing your body.
  • Repeat: Continue breathing this way for at least 5-10 minutes. As you practice, try to focus your mind on the sensation of the breath and push away intrusive thoughts.

Breathing as a Control Tool

Once you have mastered the deep breathing technique, you can use it as a powerful control tool in situations of anxiety or stress. When you are faced with difficult times, simply take a moment to apply this technique. Deep breathing will help you reduce anxiety, calm your thoughts, and regain control of your emotional well-being.

Relaxation through breathing is an accessible and effective technique that you can incorporate into your daily routine. By learning to use your breathing as a tool to manage stress and anxiety, you'll be strengthening your mental and emotional well-being significantly. Practice regularly and discover how breathing can become your ally in the search for a more balanced and peaceful life.
